A recent trip across town felt like a world away for a small group of students from Pembroke Academy. The 15 students, the first eighth-grade class for the middle school, visited Westfield Preparatory High School as part of a “Move Up” day to prepare for their next year of school.
The students, accompanied by middle school Dean Rachal Hetzel, had plenty of questions about the workings of their future surroundings.
“They were very curious about the building, curricular programming, and sports,” Hetzel said. “They participated in a presentation that detailed items including courses, athletics, discipline matrix, and social opportunities.”
The visit included a tour of the school, an authentic high school lunch, and a meeting with the Warriors’ mascot, principal Katie Sims and assistant principal Kurtis Dollison.
Hetzel said the students were surprised by how different the daily life of a high school student looked from their current situation.
“I think they were surprised by the amount of autonomy and independence they were seeing in the building,” Hetzel said. “In middle school, they are always supervised. In high school, there was an obvious shift, with greater responsibility placed on students.”
This was the first visit of this type for Pembroke students. Hetzel said she hopes students got a good understanding of the academic and behavioral expectations.
