Not only did they have students bring in much needed items for the local food bank, but they were also challenged to perform an act of kindness in their community. Students learned about kindness and were told this activity would not be mandatory for students. There also would be no prizes for participation. They were encouraged to think of kindness from their hearts, and to participate if they felt moved to do so.
As you may expect, most students were eager to join in. Kindergarten through second grade colored Thanksgiving place mats while third through fifth graders designed “fun mail” for patients at the Levine Children’s Hospital. Some students also made key chains and painted rocks for the Levine fun mail. Middle school scholars wrote kind messages on cards they designed for elderly members of the community.
“It was truly wonderful to see how excited the scholars were for these projects,” Matthews Charter Academy Admissions Representative Mary Funderburk said. “The vast majority participated. The kids did great with food collection as well.”
The school donated 677 pounds of food, making the food drive and Kindness Week a great success.
