Pembroke Academy Scholar Earns Prestigious College Scholarship, One of Four Nationally

One Pembroke Academy scholar ended the school year with a surprise: She was the recipient of a $5,000 college scholarship. Chosen from hundreds of applicants who hail from more than 90 National Heritage Academies (NHA) partner-schools, London Brazil was one of four rising scholars to receive the award through NHA’s CollegeBound™ Scholarship Program.

“It is my great pleasure to congratulate this year’s class of CollegeBound™ Scholarship winners,” said NHA President and CEO Brian Britton. “To hear these scholars’ stories of courage and perseverance is inspiring, and to see the impact our educators have had in encouraging their success is uplifting – it’s the tangible outcome of education transforming lives in the communities we serve.”

London shared that her school’s caring educators and its character-based focus on education through Moral Focus virtues gave her the courage to persevere, even when self-doubt crept in.

In her essay on the CollegeBound™ Scholarship application London explained that channeling these virtues helped her stay calm and focused when taking the PSAT test. “With all the rigorous prepping, and endless worrying, having perseverance and courage were key to success.”

Like many of her peers, she applies these Moral Focus virtues to her daily life and is nothing less than an exemplary scholar, said her Principal Salwa Kinsey and Middle School Dean Rachal Hetzel.

“Whether it’s demonstrating academic excellence through her classroom grades and state test scores, being voted president of the National Junior Honor Society, or leading the safety patrol team, ensuring younger scholars get to their destinations safely during dismissal, London always takes pride in everything she does and leads by example,” they said. “She embodies the NHA Moral Focus virtues and exudes strength, confidence, and resilience that are unmatched.

“Your Pioneer Family cheers for you now, and we will continue to cheer for you in the future!”

The CollegeBound™ Scholarship Program is managed by an independent program administrator. Scholarship considerations include academic performance, community involvement, and a written essay. Through the application process, scholars can share about the experiences that have shaped them and the people who have influenced their lives – from community service to the real-world application of Moral Focus virtues to defining moments in the decision to pursue a STEM-based education.

Funding for the scholarship is provided through NHA employee contributions, people who believe in NHA’s mission to help every child achieve their dreams.
