Spreading Holiday Cheer Through Classroom Caroling

The holiday season isn’t just about festive decorations —it’s about spreading joy. At Taylor Exemplar Academy, one way students embrace the season is through music. Each December, fourth-grade students spend time caroling in classrooms throughout the school.

“This is all for fun, but they are still learning how to sing in an ensemble regardless of what they’re singing, which is amazing,” explained Isabella Motzny-Smith, choir and band director.

Starting in mid-November, students spend the first ten minutes of class rehearsing holiday songs. Then, once December arrives, they set out on a mission to brighten the school. “I think they like ‘Jingle Bells’ the best because I let them use the jingle bells for that one,” Motzny-Smith added.

The tradition is a hit among teachers and staff too. Motzny-Smith sends out a sign-up sheet, and slots fill up quickly. “Sometimes we perform for a full classroom, and other times, an entire grade level squeezes into one space to listen,” she said.

The best part is seeing the joy it brings to everyone involved. “When we visit the rooms, the students are working, and then their faces just light up when they see us coming in,” Motzny-Smith shared. “And at the end, we always hand out candy canes, so of course they’re excited about that!”

Beyond the fun, caroling helps students gain confidence in performing. “It’s not so nerve-wracking because they’re with their friends and former teachers,” she said. “It’s a great way to get kids excited about music.”

Motzny-Smith also believes it creates connections within the school. “I think it helps improve school spirit,” she said. “Especially during such a dark and cold time of the year, it brings everyone together.”

Her ultimate goal is simple: “I just hope they’re enjoying themselves. Music is supposed to be fun, and I hope they’re learning something, too. But for the most part, I just really hope they’re having fun.”
