Communities in Schools

Detroit Merit Charter Academy partners with Communities In Schools (CIS), a non-profit organization that works in collaboration with schools across the country to empower students to stay in school and succeed in life.

Simply put, the goal is to surround students with a caring community of support. This is created by helping families access critical resources like food, housing, healthcare, counseling, and other needed support so they can take charge to provide a better future for themselves and their family.

Making a Difference in Students' Lives

CIS will place an on-site CIS Site Coordinator at our school to work with our staff, school leaders, families, and students to provide support services.

CIS specializes in developing school support plans, working with school leaders to create goals and objectives that will be implemented at the school. Additionally, they partner with outside agencies and school staff to enhance school programs by offering added support for our families.

Our partnership with CIS has many benefits:

  • Supportive guidance and counseling
  • Educational Support
  • Tutoring
  • Mentoring
  • Enrichment Activities

We connect programs, services and resources to students in need, keeping them in school and on a path to life-long success.

What We Do

Non-Academic Assistance

Helping with basic needs like healthcare, nutrition or clothing so young people are better prepared to learn.

One-to-One Mentoring

Instilling the confidence to succeed, the belief that education creates opportunity, and setting the expectation for success.

Tutoring

Young people who fall behind often stay behind. We help kids catch up and stay ahead.

Family Involvement

Ensuring children have a supportive home life, increasing parent-school involvement, and helping parents access the services they need.

Preparing for the Future

Students build leadership and life skills, explore college and career options, and understand how their education is connected to their financial future.

CIS School Plans

CIS specializes in developing school support plans to create goals and objectives that will be implemented at the school. They also partner with outside agencies and school staff to enhance school programs by offering added support for our families. This support could include hosting parent events, providing clothing or housing assistance, providing access to backpacks or supplies, and mentoring programs to name a few.
