The Painting with Parents event, a first for the school, was planned as one 30-person session but seats filled up quickly.
“We had families RSVP and there was such an interest that we added an additional session, for a total of two sessions and 60 people,” Detroit Merit Principal Sandra Martin said. “It was a good turnout and families had a blast.”
Organized by Student Support Coordinator Maryam Mufti, students and their parents worked on paintings while enjoying snacks and togetherness time.
“It was a great event and I’m excited to run the fourth- through eighth-grade event after learning from this one and work out all the hiccups,” Mufti said.
The group worked on similar paintings with a Picasso cubism-esq style, and, as is wonderfully common in art, created many different looking paintings.
“It was so nice to see parents and students having fun together doing crafts or crafty things,” Martin said. “Students so often spend their time online or connected. This was some good old fashion fun. Our families were able to sit together, have conversations with each other, bond, and create something great.”
