Moorehead, one of Westfield Prep’s most recent graduates, isn’t planning on getting rid of that character trait any time soon.
The two-year attendee of Westfield Prep enjoyed her time at the National Heritage Academies (NHA) partner school, feeling right at home despite starting at the school in her junior year.
“I actually enjoyed going to school,” Moorehead said. “I enjoyed all my classmates, teachers, and staff. They all made it feel like home.”

Her favorite memories came when she was lending a hand at a variety of school events. Moorehead was a member of student leadership and loved events like Field Day, Homecoming, and pep rallies, many of which she helped put on.After school, Moorehead found a way to help in the athletic realm, playing point guard on Westfield Prep’s girls basketball team. She led the team to a regional championship in March as a part of the MHSAA State Tournament.
Moorehead felt like she immensely improved after two years at Westfield Prep.
“I feel like I grew a lot my senior year,” Moorehead said. “During my junior year, I didn't really play because I had a stress fracture in my right tibia. But I learned from the sidelines and I was still that all the practices. I definitely grew my leadership. I grew more confident in myself coming off that injury.”
Going to play Division I athletics is a special achievement for Westfield Prep’s Kaylin Moorehead.
She credited Moral Focus virtues, which are cornerstones of NHA’s character-based curriculum, for her growth in leadership. Moorehead said she applied integrity the most because in her process, doing the right thing and working hard led her to success.Her hard work and integrity led her to a full-ride basketball scholarship at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Moorehead said she chose IUPUI because she felt the coaching staff believed in her, even through injuries that arose. The scholarship was special in several ways for Moorehead.
“I'm from Jackson, Michigan, so it means a lot coming from somewhere where not a lot of people go play Division I sports,” Moorehead said. “It just means so much because I am not paying for anything out of pocket. To go to school for free and do what I love is amazing.
“I’ll also be able to pursue my goal of becoming a travel nurse.”
Moorehead is already on campus in Indianapolis and is planning on pursuing a career as a travel nurse, taking pre-nursing classes at IUPUI while not on the basketball floor.
Helping others is integral to Kaylin Moorehead, who is hoping to become a travel nurse.
It all comes back to one thing: helping others.“I feel like I really am a good helper,” Moorehead said. “I just love helping people and when I help people, it makes me feel good. When you do good things, they always come back to you. I do love helping people and I feel like (a career as a travel nurse) is something I will enjoy.”
