Walker Charter Academy was one of two charters that received a reauthorization contract of seven years from Grand Valley State University. In its 24th year as an authorizer, Grand Valley charters 75 school buildings, including 13 in Kent and Ottawa counties.
The strength of the program determines the number of years for which it is reauthorized. Walker Charter Academy was reauthorized based on demonstrating strength in its educational programs, organizational soundness, and fiscal stability.
“GVSU’s decision to renew our charter for the maximum seven years is a vote of confidence for our teachers, staff, students, and parents,” said Steve Bagley, principal at Walker Charter Academy. “I’m very happy for each of them and thankful to be a part of the special community at Walker Charter Academy.”
According to the most recent state data, 60.8 percent of Walker Charter Academy students were proficient in English Language Arts (ELA) at the end of third grade. Student academic growth for third- through eighth-grade is 56.2 percent. Of those students, 48 percent were proficient in both math and ELA.
“Each member of the Walker staff work tirelessly to make the school a great choice for students and parents and we’re pleased to be able to continue to offer a positive environment where kids can grow and learn for many years to come,” said Bagley.
