National Heritage Academies (NHA) has been a trailblazer in the charter school world for decades. Since opening its first school, Excel Charter Academy, in 1995, NHA has grown into one of the largest and most well-respected charter school operators in the country. Today, NHA manages 100 schools, educating more than 65,000 K-12 students across nine states.
NHA is committed to providing a well-rounded educational experience, offering everything from Young 5s programs to Early Middle College opportunities for high school students. According to a Stanford University study, students at NHA schools gain nearly three and a half months of additional learning each year compared to their peers in traditional public schools.
What truly sets NHA apart is its Moral Focus curriculum. It’s not just about getting good grades; it’s about shaping good people. By weaving character education into every lesson, NHA helps students grow into thoughtful, responsible individuals who are prepared for both academic and personal success.
Dr. Nick Sheltrown, NHA’s President and Chief Learning Officer, recently shared what makes NHA schools in West Michigan so special during an interview with WOOD TV8's EightWest. He highlighted the unique blend of academic rigor and character development that defines NHA’s approach. See the full interview below.
NHA offers 14 charter schools in the Grand Rapids, Holland, and Muskegon area, as well as schools in Lansing, Battle Creek, and Kalamazoo. Seats are still available for the 2024-25 school year.
