The first day of school is closely approaching, and one school is gearing up for their first official school day ever! Summit Creek Academy, a Greensboro-area public charter school managed by National Heritage Academies, is preparing for their first school year by engaging the local community at their Summer at the Summit community event.
Summit Creek will offer grades K-5 in 2021, adding one grade level, up to eighth grade, each year. The event was a chance for the community to learn more about the school and participate in fun activities.
“Summer at the Summit is a gathering of our new family to celebrate the great things happening in the life of our school. We brought together folks from all walks of life to start a school, a family, and movement of positivity, laughter, and fun,” said Amanda Brown, principal at Summit Creek. “Starting a new school year with new people can be scary. It is important that we have a connection to our scholars before they arrive on the first day of school to begin building those relationships and foster emotional safety so that learning comes easy!”
This event was an opportunity for the nearly 300 student and parent attendees to meet Principal Brown. Attendees enjoyed a live DJ, food truck, Kona Ice, and freshly popped popcorn. They even got their faces painted and jumped on a bounce house.
“Every parent I spoke to commented on the positive energy that was common amongst the staff,” said Brown. “They felt welcomed and the activities we had were student-centered and designed to provide opportunities for students to make new friends. It was truly a celebration.”
Parents learned about Summit Creek, the Moral Focus program, the opportunities for enrichment, and more. NHA believes that kindness, and strong hearts and minds can impact the world in significant ways. Every month Summit Creek Academy will highlight a different Moral Focus virtue, such as respect, compassion, and perseverance, to develop the whole student, heart and character included.
Brown was excited to meet families. “They were so nice and excited about starting something new and being a part of the history that will live in the Greensboro/Browns Summit-area,” she said. “Meeting students and families made this process real. It solidified why we are doing what we do. We will capture the hearts and minds of these scholars and their families and make Summit Creek the best school for them.”
Brown is looking forward to welcoming all their scholars back to a normal school environment. Summit Creek’s theme this year is “Positive Minds, Positive Vibes, Positive School” and Brown shared they are serious about spreading positivity and reestablishing the learning environment as a fun and safe place.
Summit Creek Academy is giving students the best start and is excited to welcome students August 2021. This event got Brown even more excited for the school year to start. “Bring on August 19!” she said.
