Local professionals gathered to answer questions from the scholars and share some of their experiences. Summerfield First Grade Teacher Laurel Hawkins helped organize the event and was pleased to see how excited her young students were about their futures.
In attendance were a TV reporter, firefighters and EMS, police, a realtor, karate instructor, chef, airline pilot, speech pathologist, the U.S. Army, nurse, a professional printer, and more.
“We heard all sorts of things after the event!” she said. “The chef, arena football team the Carolina Cobras, and the two aircraft occupations seemed to be the top favorites. There were many comments about how interesting the jobs were, and how it would be so fun to do that job for a day. Many students were very intrigued by the different things these occupations did.”

Representatives from the University of North Carolina Greensboro and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University were present to speak with students about their educational futures as well.
“Students were able to ask these colleges questions such as what their mascot is, what majors they have, how to apply, and more. It was a cool experience for them – especially the middle schoolers who are not far from attending college.”
Mayor of Summerfield Tim Sessoms opened the day with a speech to the school. He explained how important it is to learn every day, so that they can reach their goals and achieve their future dream occupations.
“Personally, in my class, I had a lot of students that wanted to be a nurse, pilot, or police officer after participating in career day. The fun items that the volunteers brough in were definitely an eye catcher. We had items from football team hats, stickers, to even charcuterie plates.”

Great work introducing scholars to future opportunities, Summerfield!
