Students from kindergarten through fourth grade took part in The NED Show, a 45-minute character education assembly teaching kids about a variety of characteristics to help them become a champion in school and in life. NED is a cartoon character and the star of the show. His name is also an acronym for the show’s major themes: Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best.
After seeing NED in person last year, Stambaugh students took part in a virtual experience called a Kindness Adventure. NED and his friend Matt traveled throughout Africa to meet with the people there, learn more about their culture, and install water wells to provide clean drinking water. NED shared the story of his expedition with students, showing the kindness in the interactions he had along the way.
Stambaugh students got a lesson on kindness from the comforts of their own desks.
Students were engaging with NED and Matt, asking questions to the pair, and having conversations about how they can be kind throughout their school like NED was on his adventure in Africa. The audience was also excited to relate NED’s work with their own lives.
Student and Family Liaison Katie Smaldino helped bring The NED Show to Stambaugh, and she said it was important to bring a fun, engaging event to scholars, while also teaching them about kindness.
“At a young age, kids can be out for themselves,” Smaldino said. “I don’t think they realize they should take time to think about others. I think teaching them these lessons early on can help eliminate a lot of behavior problems.”
The NED Show traveled to Africa on their Kindness Adventure, speaking with locals and learning about their culture while building a well for clean drinking water.
The NED Show was a hit with Stambaugh scholars, who have helped the school outperform the local district for 12 years. Smaldino said she hopes to bring NED back for a new adventure at least once more by the end of this school year.
Thanks for bringing this to Stambaugh, Katie!
