South Pointe Staff Gets Creative Hosting Summer Events and Enjoys Connecting with Families

National Heritage Academies schools hold fun and unique activities over the summer and in preparation for the start of school. Here is a round-up of events at a few of our schools.

Canton Prep High School, Achieve Charter Academy, and Canton Charter Academy

Two days of great weather was the backdrop for the opportunity to talk about the awesome programs available at Canton Prep High School, Achieve Charter Academy, and Canton Charter Academy. All three schools worked together as a major sponsor for the Second Annual Cherry Hill Village Festival in Canton, Michigan, Aug. 27 and 28. Nearly 10,000 people attended the weekend community festival.

As a major sponsor, the schools were featured in Canton Today magazine mailed to more than 39,000 homes and received two prime booth spaces.

“There was non-stop traffic to our booth as the children loved spinning the wheel for prizes while parents stopped to learn more about the high school opportunity at Canton Prep,” Canton Prep High School Senior Admissions Representative Patti El-Amin said.

“I want to thank Admissions Manager, Angela Liegghio and our principals from Achieve, Canton Charter, and Canton Prep for spending time at our booths talking with families. I’m also grateful when members of my Canton crew of school ambassadors are on hand. I have such appreciation for Deepa Sivakumar and Lalita Mishra for their support, along with their dedication to our community and NHA.”

Fortis Academy

People at a petting zoo.

About 500 people attended the Fortis Academy Back-to-School Carnival on Aug. 25. Students were able to meet their teacher, see their classroom, and drop off classroom supplies.

Parents were able to complete required paperwork, pick up Driveline cards, and purchase Fortis spirit wear while they were at the event.

Fortis had bouncy houses, a mobile escape room, petting farm, pony rides, and popsicles for families to enjoy.

“We had great turnout that included some returning families and some first-time families,” Dean of Special Education and Intervention Kimberly Powers said.

Grand River Academy

People at a face painting station.

Families, scholars, and staff at Grand River Academy were welcomed by Detroit Lions mascot Roary at the Meet the Teacher Night/Community Partners Expo on Aug. 23.

Students visited their new teachers and were able to drop off supplies. Families met with different vendors set up in the gym and enjoyed face painting, waffles on a stick, and ice cream.

Some vendors included Livonia Police, S.T.Y.L.E., Dove Pharmacy, and M & M Aftercare. The intervention staff gave away 100 reading books to scholars. Every student walked away with brag tags that were available at each classroom and vendor table.

“It was a wonderful way to welcome families back into the building in preparation for the 2022-23 school year,” Dean of Upper Elementary Kimberly Johnson said.

South Pointe Scholars Charter Academy

Students spinning a prize wheel.

A Meet and Greet was held at South Pointe Scholars Charter Academy in early August. About 110 families attended, which was about 350 people.

Parents were excited to be back at the school and meet some of the new staff, including the new principal, Ralph Garza.

A lot of fun was had with the help of a DJ playing music, pizza and snacks, and two bounce houses. Scholars and families could play cornhole, frisbee, lawn Jenga and participate in field day games and activities. Families could put their names in to win raffle prizes and spin the wheel for prizes, as well.
