Queen’s Grant Community School Student Named CollegeBound™ Scholarship Recipient

Anthony Byrd, eighth-grade student at Queen’s Grant Community School, was surprised by Krista Tolchin, principal at Queen’s Grant, Philip Adam, dean of middle school, and other Queen’s Grant staff members as they delivered the news that he is a 2020 CollegeBound™ Scholarship Recipient.
 
Staff at Queen’s Grant were delivering materials to the homes of eighth-grade students and had a surprise for Byrd! Staff stopped at Byrd’s house to share the exciting news and to deliver a giant check for winning the scholarship. The one-time $5,000 scholarship will go towards his college education.
   
“Anthony is a polite and respectful young man who speaks well with his peers and adults,” shared Philip Adam, middle school dean at Queen’s Grant. “He appreciates people, Moral Focus virtues, and other aspects of life that are not always seen in a middle school student. This appreciation is seen in his actions and choices on a daily basis.”
 
Byrd is one of only four recipients of the annual CollegeBound^TM Scholarship, courtesy of National Heritage Academies (NHA). Students from 89 schools across the country applied for the scholarship.


 
Byrd was selected from hundreds of applicants after being reviewed by the CollegeBound™ Scholarship Committee, which considers academic performance, community involvement, and a written essay. The essay focuses on one of four topics related to the school’s Moral Focus curriculum, which teaches students to be well-rounded individuals by teaching monthly virtues, such as gratitude and encouragement.


 
“It is our pleasure to recognize Anthony Byrd as a recipient of the 2020 CollegeBound Scholarship,” said Brian Britton, CEO of National Heritage Academies. “We are so proud of his dedication and hard work in the classroom and beyond. We look forward to seeing the many good things he will go on to accomplish.”
 
Byrd volunteers at the YMCA, Moss Pottery Studio, and Tucker Tree Farm. He hopes to graduate college with a degree in criminal justice and social justice and wants to make a positive impact on the world.


 
All NHA eighth-grade students were eligible to enter for their chance at the scholarship. The winners were chosen by an independent professional selection group, based on the students’ essay submission, academics, and community service.
