Prevail Middle School Students Focus on Safety

You see them every day in the hallways, classrooms, and parking lot at Prevail Academy. The team of middle school safety specialists work every day to help keep their fellow students safe and following the rules between classes.

From managing hallway traffic to overseeing bathroom access between classes, these scholars have a big impact on their school environment. “They get out of class two minutes before each transition, grab their safety vests, and head to their assigned spot,” explains Canise Stewart-Singleton, dean of middle school. “Their job is to keep students on track, make sure they follow school procedures.”

These students also help support teachers during safety drills which helps them develop valuable leadership skills. Stewart-Singleton shares a memorable moment: “One of the safeties was in the hallway when they heard a commotion in a classroom and immediately came to find me. That instinct to find support if they hear something or see something that’s not safe was really impressive.”

The safety specialists get specific training to prepare for their roles, especially when it comes to school drills. Stewart-Singleton works closely with them, explaining their responsibilities and guiding them through fire and lockdown scenarios. Being a school safety specialist teaches students to be observant and responsible, while giving them real-world experience. “We teach them to see a need and fill it. They are gaining leadership and mentoring skills through this,” she says.

In addition to keeping the school safe, the Safety Specialists also help younger students, like kindergartners, get to their cars at the end of the day. “They actually enjoy it,” Stewart-Singleton adds. “They’ve been building relationships with the little guys, which is really cool.”
