In early April, Prevail Academy was officially named a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School by the Flippen Group for the 2018-19 school year. Prevail was nominated early in the school year by a Capturing Kids’ Hearts employee following a two-day professional development course for the school’s staff.
Many years ago, Prevail Academy began an initiative to transform the campus into an emotionally safe and relationally connected place for students, staff, and parents. In August of 2018, Prevail Academy participated in a two-day course to recommit to this initiative. Upon nomination, the school went through a rigorous process of observations and interviews to stay in the running.
“Based on the feedback from scholars, teachers, parents, the leadership team, and support staff, we were selected as one of 202 schools nationwide to earn the award for the 2018-19 school year,” said Stacey Jovanovski, dean of lower elementary at Prevail. “We are honored and proud!”
Through the Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools awards, the Flippen Group recognizes and celebrates campuses that go the extra mile each day, building an environment where students and staff feel safe and connected. Nominees are considered based on a variety of criteria, including observations, data regarding academic and behavioral improvements, among others.
“During the training courses, teachers and staff learned processes to increase students’ connectedness with both peers and adults on campus. They learned how to create a classroom environment where students are excited to enter and learn every day,” said Jovanovski. “As a result, Prevail Academy has enjoyed impressive improvement and a drastic decrease in negative behavior referrals.”
