Kazeem, who is a gifted student in Doug Irwin’s advanced math class, recently entered a statewide online mathematics competition and took second place for Pinnacle, which outperforms the local district.
“His exceptional mathematical abilities made him an ideal candidate for the contest,” said Irwin.
Irwin encouraged Kazeem to take part in the annual Ohio Mathematics Contest, where top scholars from across the state compete against other students their age.
Sultan Kazeem takes home one of the top spots at a statewide mathematics competition.
To prepare for the competition, Kazeem took part in extra tutoring sessions during class time, covering advanced topics beyond the eighth-grade curriculum.
“The testing site sent me some practice questions, so I printed those out,” shared Irwin. “They were pretty intense, so he was a little nervous.”
Despite the challenging material, Kazeem’s hard work and Irwin’s extra tutoring paid off.
His position as one of the top finishers earned him prize money, a spot at the virtual awards ceremony, and a small party with his classmates.
Irwin says Kazeem hopes to one day put his love of math to use with a career in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) field.
“Kazeem is a bright student, with a bright future ahead of him,” said Irwin. “We’re so proud of you, keep dreaming.”
Congratulations, Sultan, on your well-deserved success!
