Meet Orion Academy Principal Tonjarene Bronston

Tonjarene Bronston is the heart and soul of Orion Academy, a National Heritage Academies (NHA)-affiliated charter school in Cincinnati, Ohio. With 28 total years of experience in education, she prides herself not just as a principal but as a lifelong educator who always felt this career path was innate as she was blessed with many of the skills that make up a positive, impactful teacher.

From an early age, Tonjarene knew education was her path. She fondly recalls teaching her stuffed animals before she even started school, with a natural passion for guiding others. “I have many teachers who inspired me to dream and go after my career. I have learned from every principal I’ve worked with,” Principal Bronston said.

With close to 30 years of experience as an educator with a master’s in education administration and leadership and multiple licensing achievements, Tonjarene is well-equipped for her role as Orion Academy’s principal. She’s seen the ins and outs of both charter and non-charter schools yet strongly advocates for the tailored, research-based approach that NHA schools provide. Her goal for the school year is that her school masters small group instruction, ensuring that every student grows and gains the confidence to shine in their own unique way.

For Principal Bronston, the students are the best part of her job. She enjoys seeing students’ faces light up when they finally grasp a concept or experience something new in their learning journey. However, it’s not just the students who keep her motivated. The staff at Orion Academy are just as vital to her success and joy. “Seeing my staff learn, grow, and succeed fuels me daily."

When it comes to parental involvement, Tonjarene is adamant about the importance of a support system. She believes that even if parents don’t know exactly how to help, their presence alone can make a world of difference. It’s all about showing up, being there, and letting the child know they are supported.

Principal Bronston is a believer in the power of wisdom and how it serves as a foundation for all other virtues, guiding decisions and actions both in the classroom and in life. Her favorite mantra she lives by every day, is: "Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready." It’s a proactive approach to life that she encourages in her staff and students alike.

Now in her second year at NHA and her seventh year as a principal, Tonjarene Bronston is committed to creating an environment where everyone—students, staff, and parents—can grow and glow together.

“My wish for every child is that they reach their full potential, whatever that may be,” she said. Whether college is the goal or an alternative path in life awaits, Principal Bronston understands that every student has a unique journey to embark on.
