Meet Milwaukee Scholars Principal Blaire Beyer

Economically, 2011 was a difficult year to graduate from college. For Blaire Byer, however, the timing couldn’t have been better. She graduated that summer with a degree in education from UW Oshkosh, and Milwaukee Scholars, set to open that fall, needed teachers.

“I started my journey at Milwaukee Scholars as a founding teacher in the library before stepping into a first-grade classroom for the inaugural school year,” Principal Beyer shared. “I then taught special education for several years before moving into dean roles.”

Over the years, Principal Beyer has served as the dean of four-year-old kindergarten through second grade, the dean of special education, and the dean of middle school and special education. Now, as principal, she is excited to have a bigger impact on all the students at Milwaukee Scholars.

“Every child should have access to quality education, and in urban settings, that often is not the case,” said Principal Beyer. “I’m passionate about being able to reach kids in urban areas and provide them with a quality education and see their growth as we move to close the education gap.”

Milwaukee Scholars has certainly seen growth since Principal Beyer took on the role in 2023. Not only has the school accomplished a major growth goal with its authorizer, but students’ proficiency test scores are also on the rise.

When asked how Principal Beyer anticipates seeing additional growth and proficiency among students this year, her answer was simple: parental involvement.

“Parental involvement is integral to a student's success,” she said. “It’s important to hold every adult stakeholder in a kid’s life to high expectations because if we don't have high expectations for parents, how can we hold students to high expectations?”

Milwaukee Scholars holds orientations to help set those expectations with parents. Families come before school starts and sign the Commitment to Excellence contract, and they are also invited to family events once a month to see what their kids are learning.

Last year, Principal Beyer helped institute Parent University, a monthly event that provides information and support on topics parents may need assistance with, such as English literacy, housing education, and student behavior. Parents are encouraged to suggest future topics they would like to see, and childcare is provided with every event.

“I am deeply invested in seeing our school and students succeed. I’ve been here since day one, so I know what our potential for excellence is. I’m committed to ensuring others recognize that potential, too,” Principal Beyer said. “That’s what drives me every day.”

Quick Facts:
  • Principal Beyer received her undergraduate degree in general and special education from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and a master’s in administrative leadership, curriculum, and instruction from Alverno College.
  • When she’s not at school, Principal Beyer loves reading, spending time with her husband and dogs, and cheering on the Packers.
  • Her favorite children’s book is Love You Forever, written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Sheila McGraw.
