Elyse Winter, a fifth-grade teacher at Laurus Academy, earned a degree in science and applies that background using math manipulatives such as building blocks to help students work through problems with additive volumes.
“I know for me with my science degree, I learned a lot more when I could be hands-on in the lab than just learning stuff on paper and pencil,” she said. “It gives them a chance to really apply their formulas to real life situations that they’re in or actually see what they’re working on and I think that helps bridge the gap when it comes to this test taking.”

This is Winter’s second year at Laurus, which has outperformed the district for 10 years, and the results have been impressive. This year, in her honors class of 31 students, 100% were proficient in math Interim #2 tests and 97% in English Language Arts.
“I saw it click with them how to do it on paper,” she said. “That was probably one of my most proud moments, seeing that connection between the physical application and then the abstract application.”
After earning a degree in science, Winter started substitute teaching as a means to earn extra money after graduation. She enjoyed it so much that she earned her teaching certificate and landed at Laurus, which has proven to be a welcome environment for a first-time teacher.

“I love the school, I love the staff,” she said. “The kids are really hard-working here and I appreciate that it's a great place to work.”
As she continues at Laurus, Winter wants to instill confidence in students and their abilities in math that carry on to sixth grade and beyond.
“Her dedication to the profession is refreshing,” said Laurus Principal Carolyn Bullard. “She inspires so many of us and her students and parents love her.”

Keep up the excellent work, Ms. Winter!
