Several students at Alliance Academy are being recognized for their poetry writing skills after entering a nation-wide contest, known as the “National Schools Project: Young American Poetry Digest Competition.”
Schools across the nation participate in the project, which encourages students to write creatively to receive recognition for their efforts by being published.
The poems are reviewed by educators who select the best poems for publication based on the following criteria: creativity, age-appropriate language, sensory/figurative images, structure, and poetic techniques. The student’s age and grade level, and the overall quality of the poem are also taken into consideration.
“Six of our poets created exceptional Haiku entries and were highlighted in this year's National Schools Project YAP Digest for publication,” said Patricia Kempton-Smith, middle school language arts teacher. “This makes a total of eight published poets in three years at Alliance!”
The poets are Lanaia Huff, eighth-grade, and Jeremiah Edwards, India Ferris, Janyla Hill, Zyair Coach, Zion Thompson, and Jamarion Williams, sixth-grade.
