North Carolina Teacher Licensure

Alternative Teacher Certification

The Residency License allows qualified individuals to begin teaching while they are completing requirements for their full North Carolina Teaching License.

Requirements for Licensure

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) will issue a Residency License to individuals who meet the requirements below:
  • Hold at minimum a bachelor's degree with a 2.7 GPA or higher.
  • Enrollment in an NC DPI approved Residency program.
  • Employed by a North Carolina Local Education Agency (LEA).
  • Meet Highly Qualified (HQ) status. This can be met in one of two ways:
    • Completed 24 hours of relevant course work; or
    • Passed all North Carolina State Board of Education (NCSBE) required examination(s) for licensure.
