Indiana Teacher Licensure

As an Indiana teacher, as long as your license is valid on the first day of the current academic school year, the license shall be considered valid for the duration of the current academic school year. However, the license will not be renewed until the renewal requirements have been met. Alternative Teacher Certification

An Emergency Permit (EP) is a one-year, renewable permit that will cover a full-time teacher in their position while they complete requirements for their Indiana Professional Educator License.

A Transition to Teaching (T2T) License is a three-year, non-renewable license that will cover a full-time teacher in their position while they complete requirements for their Indiana Professional Educator License.

A Charter School License is a three-year or five-year, renewable license that is valid only at Indiana Charter Schools. This license is considered full licensure at Indiana Charter Schools by the IDOE.

Requirements for Licensure

To qualify for an Emergency Permit, each candidate must:
  • Hold a valid CPR certification.
  • Have completed suicide prevention training.
  • Possess at minimum a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university.
    • Submit official transcripts of all degrees (not needed if the applicant holds an Indiana Educator License).
  • EPs for Building Level Administrators require a letter verifying a minimum of two years teaching experience. Applicants must hold a valid Indiana Educator or School Counselor License.
  • EPs for ALL Career and Technical Education (CTE) areas must provide documentation verifying 4000 hours of documented work experience. This should be a signed letter on a business letterhead. The letter should document work responsibilities, and the number of hours worked.

To qualify for a Transition to Teaching License, each candidate must:
  • Be enrolled in an IDOE approved T2T program.
  • Be hired by an Indiana School Corporation.
  • Have official transcripts that bear the sign and/or seal of the registrar, the degree, and date conferred.
    • Provide transcripts for ALL completed coursework at ALL institutions attended.
  • Have a valid CPR card from an IDOE approved provider.
  • Have a Suicide Prevention Training Certificate.
  • Have a signed letter, on letterhead, from the Indiana T2T program verifying acceptance into the program.
  • If applicable, a copy of test score report showing passing score(s) of the content area(s) that applicant also wishes to be added to a license.

To qualify for a Charter School License, each candidate must:
  • Hold a valid CPR certification.
  • Have completed suicide prevention training.
  • Meet one of the following content knowledge requirements:
    • Possess a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with an overall GPA of 3.0 with the major of the earned degree in the content area in which the candidate wants to teach; OR
    • Possess a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and pass the appropriate licensure exam in the content area the candidate wishes to teach.
