Best Educational TV Series

For decades, children have learned by watching others – and by watching television. While many of us grew up on (and can still sing songs from!) shows like Sesame Street, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, today’s streaming services and 24/7 internet access, provide young families with more access to programming than we ever dreamed.

Research has long proven that educational programs provide young children with the basic building blocks of literacy, science, and math, but new research reveals these shows teach more complex reading skills too.

According to a nine-week study by researchers at SRI Education and the Education Development Center shared in Education Week, first graders who were given a tablet loaded with episodes of PBS’ "Molly of Denali" and educational games, far outperformed the control group. While the control also received an internet-enabled tablet, access to Molly of Denali was blocked on their device, and users were given instructions simply to use the tablet for “educational purposes.”

Molly of Denali was chosen as the focus of the study because the main character solves dilemmas and collects data using informational texts like field guides, maps, and websites. At the end of the study, students were assessed on their ability to use informational texts to answer questions and solve problems. Those with access to the program exhibited a difference equivalent to the amount of reading skill a typical first grader develops over three months.
