5 Healthy Holiday Meal Sides

Amber Brandt  |  November 14, 2022

The holidays are a great time to gather loved ones around the table. It may also be a time you make nostalgic treats and special dishes you don’t otherwise eat throughout the year. Are you looking for some ways to make those traditional stand-bys a little healthier?

Whether you’re serving a main dish of turkey, roast duck, pasta, or something entirely different, try pairing it with these healthier versions of the holiday side dishes you love. We promise, they’re so delicious you won’t even miss the original recipe!

1. Roasted garlic mashed potatoes with cauliflower. No holiday is complete without mashed potatoes. And while cauliflower is sometimes a good alternative, mashing them up isn’t quite the same. Try a 50/50 approach instead with half white potatoes and half cauliflower. You’ll be able to keep the same fluffy texture you expect, while sneaking in some extra veggies. Once you’ve added garlic, parmesan, or gravy, your guests won’t even taste the difference.

2. Green bean casserole. If you’re from the Midwest you’re sure to know about the delicious casserole with green beans, French fried onions, and cream of mushroom soup. It’s creamy and delicious but known for being high in sodium and carbs. Try green bean almondine instead.

3. Sweet potatoes. Yams sweetened with brown sugar and marshmallows bring an ooey gooey sweetness to the Christmas table, but try a new take with vanilla and maple syrup.

4. Brussels Sprouts. This recipe is nothing like the mushy, boiled Brussels of our childhood. Try this delicious roasted variation with figs and toasted pumpkin seeds.

5. Butternut Squash. Candied recipes certainly have their place, but why not try this roasted savory take on an old classic? The tangy vinaigrette sauce is sure to take it over the edge.
