March is Reading Month, and schools across the National Heritage Academies’ (NHA) network celebrated through a variety of reading-themed events and activities. Check out all of the fun things that happened in March!
Achieve Charter Academy
Achieve Charter Academy hosted Literacy Night on March 13 to bring families together and promote the importance of reading. Middle schoolers got the opportunity to participate in a poetry slam. For the younger scholars, reading bingo and a book walk were highlights of the night. Scholars also participated in a game room and crafts, such as making your own bookmark. At least 100 families participated and every scholar who attended took home a book.
North Saginaw Charter Academy
At North Saginaw Charter Academy, scholars celebrated with the theme Globe Trotting Around The World. Each wing of the school was given a continent and each door in the wing was transformed into a celebration of a country in that continent. Scholars learned about the country their class was representing. Scholars kicked off the month with a Glow Night, which had activities like glow reading and a scavenger hunt. The school capped off the month with a carnival that had plenty of books available as prizes.
Ridge Park Charter Academy
Ridge Park Charter Academy was paid a visit by Andrea and Brian Pinkney, who spoke to scholars about reading and the books they’ve written together. Brian is a two-time Caldecott Medal winner for his illustration work, and Andrea has won Coretta Scott King Awards, five ALA Notable Book Awards, and three School Library Journal Best Book awards.
Vanguard Charter Academy
Scholars got “Wild About Reading” for Reading Month this year. Vanguard Charter Academy students in Young Fives through fifth grade set a goal of reading 1,000 books and easily surpassed their goal, reading over 1,200. Throughout the month, the school also had a book character scavenger hunt where book characters were "hidden" around the school. Students needed to find the book character and write the letter that's written under the character on their answer sheet. Once completed, there was a hidden message to scholars.
Vista Charter Academy
Vista Charter Academy was the site of the Pages and Playtime Party, an event thrown with assistance from the NHA Service Center. Sarah McCormick, NHA’s IT Dynamics Business Analyst Team Lead, read her children’s book “The Skunk Who Couldn’t Smell” to scholars. Afterward, scholars got to visit different game stations, including Book-It Bonanza, Book Walk, and Reading Hopscotch. Scholars also had the opportunity to make their own bookmarks and complete Mad Libs stories.
Winterfield Venture Academy
Winterfield Venture Academy hosted a Dr. Seuss Celebration event for scholars and their families. The event had a free mini book fair, as well as a pop-up story walk where students were able to step inside the pages of a book. Families got to take photos in a Dr. Seuss-themed photo booth and were treated to treats inspired by Dr. Seuss books and characters. There were various crafts and activities for families to complete together as a part of a scavenger hunt around the event. Community vendors were also on site and available for families to learn more information.
