Events during the month of November showed plenty of ways National Heritage Academies schools gave back and interacted with their communities, and many of those stories were told throughout the month on our schools’ website blogs.
There were students who created colorful placemats for a shelter’s Thanksgiving Day feast, ‘gratitude elves’ who warmed staff members’ hearts with nice notes, and even a local clown group teaching our youngest students techniques for dealing with bullies.
A highlight from the month was a special project by students in Teresa Majeski’s ELA class at Chandler Woods Charter Academy in Belmont, Mich. Majeski started a program called Project Impact that helps students get involved in volunteering in their community.
The scholars helped pack items for local food pantries, sorted clothes at a free thrift store, and cleaned up after horses at a therapeutic riding center. The experiences opened the eyes of scholars who were unaware of many of the needs in their own community.
“It’s pretty phenomenal to watch how much they grow, and how it piques the sensitive side of most of those students,” Majeski said. “Who knows? Maybe it inspires them in the future to serve more.”
November’s Moral Focus Virtue was gratitude, which is best when seen from both sides by giving and receiving. These students were able to see how their good deeds made others feel. They were grateful for that.
Below are a few links to stories from November that highlight other schools and the things they’re doing to prepare our scholars for college and beyond.
