How NHA Counselors Help Students Get Ready for College

NHA Communications Team  |  September 10, 2024
Getting ready for college can feel a little overwhelming for students and their families, but National Heritage Academies (NHA) high school counselors are here to help. They guide students through this big step and support them as they plan for life after high school. They start helping students as early as ninth grade to make sure they are on the right path, whether they want to go to college or a trade school.

It's okay if students don’t know exactly what they want to do after graduation. Counselors are here to help them figure it out. They encourage students to explore different options and find what interests them the most. If a student wants to go to college but isn’t sure what career to choose, starting at a community college can be a smart choice. This allows them to explore different subjects and figure out what they like before choosing a specific program or school.

Counselors also help with the college application process. They explain how to fill out FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which helps with college costs, and help students organize their schoolwork and activities. They often have one-on-one meetings with students and their families to answer questions and make sure everything is on track.

Another important role of counselors is helping students write strong college application essays. These essays should tell the student's own story and show who they are. Since colleges get thousands of applications each year, a well-written essay can make a big difference.

Counselors also remind students to start preparing early and research different colleges. It’s important to understand what each college offers and how it fits with their goals.

Lastly, students should reach out to their school counselors whenever they need help. Counselors are there to support them, but they often rely on students to ask for help when they need it.
