First Day of School: Tips for a Smooth Start
Published: May 09, 2024
Most children know Memorial Day means they get a Monday off from school — but this year, why not take some time to talk about what this holiday really means? And what better way to help them learn than by incorporating a fun and memorable activity?
This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27th because is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) is a federal holiday that was instituted in 1971 to honor the brave men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
People mark the holiday in a variety of ways. Some visit cemeteries to leave flowers and recall personal memories, while others invite friends or families over for a backyard barbecue, or go to the beach. This holiday is regularly noted as the first major celebration of the summer. It’s important for children to understand the weight and sometimes somber meaning of the day, but it’s totally acceptable to find ways to enjoy “holiday” fun as well. Here are a few patriotic holiday items you can make and display (or eat!) together.
1. American flag paint stick project We love this idea because it’s quick, festive and you may even have most of these supplies already at home!
2. Easy American flag DIY luminary lanterns Perfect for summer evenings outdoors or to decorate a dining room tablescape.
3. Patriotic paper lollies These little circular fans are easy to make with craft paper and some glue or double sided tape.
4. Red, white and blue Rice Krispie Treats Need we say more?
5. Patriotic shortcakes Blueberries, strawberries and white cake make for a patriotic treat! You can make these in a clear cup with whipped cream on top, or put them on kabobs for another fun way to serve them!
