A mission to make her history class the most interesting course in school drove Jessica Wood to get into teaching, and now she has the distinction of being named Michigan History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
A teacher at Arbor Preparatory High School since 2012, Wood often mentors other teachers when they’re getting started, and makes a point to challenge students to see issues from multiple perspectives.
The state honor qualifies her to be considered for National History Teacher of the Year, which the organization will announce in October.
“This feels really good because the Gilder Lehrman Institute is like the leading American history education organization in the U.S., and so for a history teacher, this is the highest honor that you can get that's history teacher specific,” Wood said. “I am super honored.”
